…ancora in casa Vinyl Lovers per segnalare la pubblicazione, per la prima volta su vinile, dei leggendari demos (1964-1967) dei Wilde Flowers, il leggendario gruppo che dette vita alla scena di Canterbury nella seconda meta’ degli anni ‘60. La band, che non ha mai fatto uscire alcunche’ durante la propria esistenza, includeva Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, Hugh Hopper (tutti poi nei Soft Machine), insieme ai futuri membri dell’ altra band leader del movimento, i  Caravan (David Sinclair, Richard Sinclair, Pye Hastings, Richard Coughlan, Brian Hopper). …la label è sempre la stessa, l’ormai benemerita Vinyl Lovers, ma il campo d’azione cambia totalmente. Dalle melliflue lande canterburiane ai torridi palchi calcati da una delle più grandi punk band americane (e non solo) di sempre, il passo sembra davvero l’equivalente di un salto triplo. Eppure anche la voce di Darby Crash e la chitarra di Pat Smear, il braccio e la mente dei fantastici Germs, hanno la loro poesia. Maledetta, probabilmente, ma comunque poesia. …originariamente stampato in sole 300 copie e non distribuito nei negozi, ma venduto attraverso canali alternativi agli appassionati di cose ”esoteriche”, ritorna alla luce ad opera della genovese Black Widow un disco che definire di culto è puro eufemismo. Si tratta dell’album In Cauda Semper Stat Venenum, unico parto del progetto Jacula, che prese le mosse nel lontanissimo 1966 dalle parti di Milano ad opera del trio Bartoccetti/Norton/Tiring. Una sorta di “spoken word” fra atmosferiche distese strumentali in un clima fra il fantastico e l’orrorifico. Un lavoro originalissimo e “maledettamente” attuale…

…dopo quella del terzo album Celestial Ocean del 1973, di cui vi abbiamo già riferito nelle precedenti frattaglie, la Lilith ristampa in vinile 180 gr. con accluso Cd audio anche i primi due album degli svizzeri Brainticket.  Stiamo parlando del mefistofelico debutto di Cottonwoodhill del 1971, un lungo trip acido con spiccate influenze kraute dominato dall’organo di Joel Vandroogenbroeck e dagli strani vocalizzi del cantante Dawn Muir, bandito in molti Paesi all’epoca della sua pubblicazione anche a causa dei comprovati effetti nefasti sulla psiche degli ascoltatori più indifesi, e dell’appena più canonico secondo atto di Psychonaut, nei negozi l’anno successivo ad opera di una formazione completamente rinnovata, più orientato alla forma canzone e ad un concetto un po’ meno latente di melodia, applicato con successo sia nel canto che nella struttura strumentale…

…a quasi trentacinque anni dalla sua esplosione, i Vibrators tracciano con questo Punk: The Early Years una sorta di Bignamino del punk-rock attraverso la rilettura di una ventina di classici del periodo. Fra i nomi coverizzati senza pietà spiccano Clash, Damned, Ramones, Dead Boys, Sex Pistols, Saints, Undertones, Sham 69 oltre, naturalmente, agli stessi Vibrators, presenti con ben quattro brani. …e per finire, sempre in casa Vinyl Lovers, la ristampa dell’ultima, controversa, testimonianza in studio di Johnny Thunders, dal titolo poco punk di Que Sera Sera,  che raccoglie una serie di brani messi su nastro nel 1985 con l’aiuto di svariati amici per quella che sarebbe stata una delle ultime testimonianze di uno dei padri fondatori del punk rock, prima che una morte molto punk rock se lo portasse via. Un disco lontano dai canoni che i trascorsi del suo autore avrebbero contribuito ad edificare, ma non disprezzabile… 

…Andiamo in casa Vinyl Lovers per segnalare la pubblicazione in 1000 esemplari del cofanetto di 7 LP dei Cure “Fade Away-The Early Years Vinyl Box Set”, che contiene ”Seventeen Seconds”, “Faith” e “Pornography” in edizione gatefold doppio LP comprendente il disco originale ed un intero album  di extra tracks, oltre al debutto di “Three Imaginary Boys” in edizione singola con la scaletta classica…

…non abbandoniamo queste mura amiche per parlare del box quadruplo “Fleetwood Mac In Concert-Live At The Boston Tea Party” che riporta un vasto estratto delle tre leggendarie esibizioni che l’allora band di Peter Green tenne nelle serate del 5-6-7 febbraio del 1970 al ‘Boston Tea Party’. Le registrazioni vennero effettuate con tecniche professionali con l’intenzione di trarne un album ufficiale dal vivo, ma l’improvvisa defezione del leader fece accantonare il progetto. I master furono ripresi in mano nel 1998 e vennero pubblicati nel triplo CD “The Boston Box” l’anno successivo. In 1970, Yes released their second album, the somewhat less successful “A Time And A Word”, backed by a full orchestra. During this period the band also made a number of live appearances for BBC radio where, given the freedom of a less formal setting, the performances have a more spontaneous, less structured sound than on many of their studio recordings from the same period. Although most Yes fans would cite the early seventies as the band’s most classic period, these early recordings give listeners a glimpse of what led up to that classic sound that so defined the progressive era and is the only live release to feature the original Yes line-up. Also featuring liner notes by guitarist Peter Banks who over saw the original 1998 release of these recordings. Includes an amazing version of “Every Little Thing” plus dramatic cover versions of the Beatles and Stephen Stills, and the rare Yes original – and previously unreleased – “For Everyone”.

When the band formed in 1966, Eric Clapton was already fairly well known, having performed and recorded with the Yardbirds and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, but it wasn’t until Cream that Clapton

The albums that brought in a new era called Tropicalia, a 1960s musical and political movement that sought to bring bossa nova into the future with the help of acid-fuelled psychedelia and political protest lyrics…all this through the hearts and guitars of a few left-wing student protesters / musicians based in Rio De Janeiro – including a young musician named Caetano. His musical protests soon got the attention of Brazil’s military dictator, causing him to be thrown into jail and eventually forcing him to leave the country for a brief period, but by that time the Tropicalia movement had already exploded and the groundwork for much of contemporary Brazilian music had already been laid. The four albums collected here: Tropicalia, Irene, A Little More Blue and Araçá Azul straddle this tumultuous time in Caetano’s life, with A Little More Blue being recorded while he was in exile in England. Caetano fortunately soon returned home in triumph, going on to become one of the most significant singer / songwriters of the 20th century.

One of those rare amazing bands that never became the superstars they were meant to be only because they were not from the US or the UK. In fact, they were from that other musical powerhouse, Brazil, which had not yet been fully recognized as such. In line with the avant-garde movement Tropicalia, from 1968 to 1972 Os Mutantes recorded five brilliant albums drawing from traditional Brazilian music, psychedelia, 60s rock, and fusing it together into the top-secret hydrogen bomb of a new breed of rock & roll that went on to far surpass the bands they were trying so hard to match. And then they disappeared without a trace (until their reunion in 2006)…except for their name appearing every now and again as a major influence on this or that famous rock star (Kurt Cobain begged them to do a reunion tour in 1993). This box collects their first three (and best) albums: Os Mutantes, Mutantes and A Divina Comedia ou Ando Meio Desligado, which have gone down in history as some of the best Brazilian music of all time.
